Bought an '06 R500 for the wife to replace her old E320 wagon! She loves it. And I haven't been able to post or reply from mobile in over a week, it is driving me insane because I rarely have a chance to get on a desktop. FIX KINJA MOBILE NOW PLEASE!!!!!!!!!! Apparently can't post pictures or attach links either, on desktop. Lame.

The R is silver on black and is in excellent condition, 73k miles, in case anyone is curious.

Nah, I wanted one but I couldn't find one with good service history with the right color and option packages. So I went for the M113 V8 instead. 300hp should be adequate for the wife I think...

I work with a couple guys who are about 6'5" and they can both fit comfortably in the very back at the same time. The best part is that it doesn't drive like a minivan, since it's chassis is almost identical underneath to the ML/GL. Proper diffs and transfer case and all that.

What are the trouble areas on these? I have heard the front diff can be hard on carrier bearings.

That's a fact, the front diffs do fail periodically but not on all of them. Probably the next most common issue would be the conductor plate in the transmission, but that isn't nearly as bad as it sounds. R500 is probably the most reliable, the engine is rock solid and will only need valve cover gaskets and maybe a rear main at some point in its life. The gas V6 is pretty good but only gets marginally better fuel economy over the V8, and in '06 only had the balance shaft issue. The diesels have leaky oil coolers and often wear out the air flaps in the intake manifolds. And the steering racks sometimes leak a little bit, but that can almost always be fixed with a repair kit that Mercedes makes that isn't too difficult or expensive (IMO, difficulty is objective after all). Oh, and you could maybe throw leaky front axle boots on the list too, but again, cheap and easy.

Might sound like a lot but I listed common failure items for all the engine options, exc. AMG, and not all of them will have all of those problems anyways. Proper maintenance is key, just like with any euro car.

But stupid interior and old Mercedes platform, might as well get a 211 E55 and tune it up to 700hp. Actually there is one just like that on my local CL, or was a week or so ago.
